My husband Matt and I love the BBC show Dr. Who. If you've never seen it, the show is about this "alien" time traveler who travels the universe in a Tardis (a bright blue British police call box) helping to save the world. The show has been on since 1963 and has been gaining popularity since it came back in 2005. Check it out - I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it. They have most of the episodes on Netflix.
Anyway, I was looking for a new knit or crochet project and I decided I had to make Matt a tardis hat for the winter. It's been really cold in Buffalo for the last week or so and he definitely needed something to keep his head warm. I had made him a knitted hat a couple years ago and he complained that after wearing it for a while the yarn started to get scratchy so as a solution I added a fleece lining to the hat. I saw this idea on pinterest and I loved it! Not only does it help keep his head warmer and prevent the hat from being scratchy but it also hides the inside of the hat so you don't have to worry about making the inside look neat when you're finishing the hat.
Here's what the finished hat looks like:
This was one of the first patterns I kind of came up with myself. I started with a hat that I found on the lion brand iPhone app and modified it to look like a TARDIS. By the way, I highly recommend the lion brand app - it's free and it has a ton of different patterns that are easily searchable. Here's the pattern.Materials
Size J/10 Crochet Hook
Blue Worsted Weight Yarn - 1 skein
White Worsted Weight Yarn - 1 skein
Black Worsted Weight Yarn
Yarn Needle for finishing
Stitch Markers
Optional Fleece for the lining - probably about a 1 foot x 2 foot piece
Blue Thread for sewing lining to hat
Thread Needle for sewing lining to hat
Pattern
Rnd 1 - Ch 3 with blue yarn. Join with sl st to first ch to form ring. Work 6 sc in ring. Place marker for beginning of round.
Rnd 2 - Work 2 sc in each sc around (12 sc)
Rnd 3 - *Sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (18 sc)
Rnd 4 - *Sc in next 2sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (24 sc)
Rnd 5 - *Sc in next 3sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (30 sc)
Rnd 6 - *Sc in next 4sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (36 sc)
Rnd 7 - *Sc in next 5sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (42 sc)
Rnd 8 - *Sc in next 6sc, 2 sc in next sc; repeat from * around (48 sc)

Finishing
Weave in loose ends.
I then used white yarn to write the "Police Public Call Box" within the black band.
I also used blue yarn to make the lines in the windows. Make a line vertically after the 3rd and 6th white columns and horizontally after the 3rd row of each white window.
Make a blue an white pom pom and attach it to the top.
For the felt lining I traced the outline of the hat twice leaving a extra half inch at the bottom edge and cut out the outlines. I sewed the two pieces together along the curve leaving the bottom and the extra half inch at the bottom open. Place the pieces into the hat, fold up the half inch and sew the felted pieces to the bottom edge of the hat.
