The 48 Hour Film Festival 2013

By Vicky Nardone

Two weekends ago my house was yet again, for the fourth time, turned into a movie set.  Beyond that, from Friday night to Sunday night it was just a scene of overall craziness.  You see, for the second year in a row my husband organized a team for the 48 hour film project.  What is the 48 hour film project you ask?  Good question.

This is how it works.  You put together a team of people, register for the event and pay an entrance fee.  On the Friday night of the 48 each team sends a representative to a meeting place.  The representative chooses a genre out of a hat (comedy, horror, drama, the dreaded musical or western, etc.) out of a hat.  Then, the teams are given a prop, line and character name that they have to incorporate into their film.  Each team gets a different genre but the character, line and prop are the same for all the teams.  You then have 48 hours to write, film and edit the movie.

If you know anything about film production you know that's a crazy short amount of time to produce something of good quality.  But it's a lot of fun and all the film making groups seem to love the challenge.

So this year, the ND Studios Team that my husband put together picked the Suspense/Thriller genre.

The line, character and prop were the following:
Line: Let's just say, it's not my favorite.
Character: Sandy or Slick Rudd
Prop: An extension cord

Our house always seems to serve as home base for the 48.  So Friday night they all come over and do the writing, then Saturday they are usually out on location filming (although this year our house did serve as one of the locations) and then Saturday overnight and all day Sunday they use our house for editing.  By Sunday night I am usually ready for all these people to get the heck out of my house.

So what is my role in all this you may ask?  Why, cooking of course!  I'm responsible for making sure the team has nutrition and caffeine to keep them going the entire weekend on minimal sleep.  Matt got about 1 hour of sleep from Saturday morning to Sunday night.  This year was a little crazy because Matt put together at team of 30 which is definitely the largest group I've ever cooked for.  My mom was a huge help though and a couple other people from the team helped out with dinner on Saturday night.

Do you want to see the finished product?  Check out the video here or the embedded version below.

After the 48 weekend is over they rent out a movie theater and show all the videos.  The videos must be between 4 and 7 minutes.  The 48 takes place in 120 cities around the world.  The audience gets to vote on their favorite and there is also a panel of judges to choose winners in several categories including best use of line, best cinematography, best overall movie etc.  The overall winner goes to LA to compete with the winners of all the other 48s in the other cities.  The winner of the LA showing gets to go have their movie shown at the Cannes Film Festival.  We won't find out the winner of this year's 48 for another week or two.

Matt was all excited this year because they got to shoot their movie with two Red Cameras.  He and one of the other members of their team each had one.

In case you're interested, here is their film from last year.
